L: Change the WorLd[ 22:46 ]
no matter how gifted you are, you alone cannot change the world
~ L
I must be masochistic because I actually subjected myself to seeing L die once more. I think I've seen him die a total of 4 times; in the manga, the anime, the 2nd movie and once more he's going to die in the spin-off.
Went with Jia Xuan to catch L: Change the World, and the movie was great. Not much of a plot, but it delved further into the characterization of L. It was sort of like a 'What would L do if...' kind of show, rather than focused on having a good storyline.
SPOILERS BEGIN NOW
Basically, after the 2nd movie ended, we see L writing his name down in the Death Note in order to stop Kira (Yagami Light). He wrote that L Lawliet, will die in 23 days of a heart attack peacefully.
However, even if he's about to die and all, L cannot have a peaceful time. Instead, he's faced with another case. However, while the Kira case was a serious battle of wits and intellect, the case for this time is seriously quite degrading for our dear super sleuth.
Watari dies within the first 10 minutes of the show, presumably the work of one of the shinigamis. We also get to see a cameo of Misa Amane, which I think she gets off pretty much scot-free as she's a popular celebrity and what judge would believe that she goes around killing people through supernatural means?
So, L is all alone now and going to die soon. What does he do? The usual routine in his life, like duh. Consuming enough sugar to kill someone at an alarming rate, he makes use of his time wisely by solving various crimes that have stumped the Interpol and all. Anyway, that's not the point! Fans of L already know the routine of L's life!
Hence, moving on, we see a village in Thailand struck by disease. They're all dying and bleeding from various orifices and broken skin and all. Very gross anyway. Anyway, some military forces then move in to destroy the plague-ridden village. However, we see that there is an agent of the Wammy House, F who is also involved in this yucky situation. He discovers a strange boy who is apparently unaffected by the disease at all and they escape the village where F gives the boy some instructions and later dies because he's diseased already.
Anyway, said boy follows the instructions carefully and all, and is then sent to L for the child was a gift to Watari. And since Watari is dead... the gift now falls to L.
I'm a little lazy to summarize every single thing so this summary shall be more concise.
The next person to show up on L's doorstep is 12 years old Nikaido Maki who is the daughter of Professor Nikaido, an expert on viruses and had actually made a vaccine. Though he killed himself in the end to protect the vaccine from the terrorist group. With her is a strain of the same virus that wiped out the Thai village. And behind her are a terrorist group that desires the virus so that they can eliminate the human race to create a better world. Oh and the fact that they'll make a sweet and tidy sum at the end, it's not the main goal, seriously. They just want to change the world for the better. Really.
The theme of changing the world and creating a better place is similar to Light's goal. However, this theme isn't exactly fully explored. And also, Light and L are considered geniuses, while the antagonists in this movie aren't really that smart... so the gripping battle of wits where Light and L used to outsmart each other are missing. Which is really a very wasted.
Okay back to summary because who really wants to hear me ramble on. The plot is basically very cliche. You got a boy who apparently cannot be affected by the virus. You got a girl who has a vial of the virus. You got a terrorist group out for the virus. What next? Please don't let me underestimate your intelligence.
SPOILERS, WHAT SPOILERS?
Anyway, the main goal of watching this movie is to see L. That's all for me. However, while the movie does explore character development of L, I... feel that at certain points, L's pretty out of character. But hey, I get to overdose on the quirkiness and cuteness that L is. And the fact that we actually get to see L cycling and running and... trying to straighten his back... it makes my inner fangirl pretty much satisfied.
Just don't expect too much from this movie. There is no opponent for L to outthink or outwit because he's already smarter than the lame terrorist group, unlike Light who is a much more worthier opponent.
And what makes me glad is the way that they pay tribute to the manga by naming the Thai boy Near and giving him the position of L's successor. And yup, I sort of guessed it halfway through the movie, once the boy started to play with the robot and the sugar cubes. I mean, that's so very a Near trait...
Went to Jumper with Faza today just like I said I would. And yeah, coming up would be the movie review and spoilers because I just love to summarize. Actually, no. I don't.
I WISH I HAD AN LJ-CUT.
Emo-boy Hayden Christensen returns to star in this sci-fi flick, Jumper. Once again, he plays an angsty character who apparently lacks the brains to think before jumping into the fray and shortening his survival expectancy. Luckily, he managed to survive all his stupidity, only to allow him to take more stupid actions.
The story begins when David, our protagonist, is 15 and still a normal student with no idea of his abilities. But that changes quickly as he, in an attempt to recover a snow globe for Milly (love interest and... generally useless decoration and perhaps eye candy) falls into icy water as the ice cracks and plunges him under, and needs to do something to save himself. It resulted in him jumping to the local library. Which probably stunned him as well as the other library users.
So, dripping wet and all, he drags himself home and introduces us to his... alcoholic father. The old man and David then had a confrontation in which the teen once again teleports to the library in order to escape his father.
Seeing this as a good chance to run away, David left with only a wad of cash and ended up in a motel. In order to survive, he decides to rob a bank. Using his abilities, he managed to empty the contents of the vaults without getting caught, and then begin to lead a cool life in New York City with his ill-gotten gains, Jumping here and there, travelling the world, in short.
However, what is a movie/story without a plot? Here we see the extent of David's stupidity. To loosely quote Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson), "What sort of a robber leaves notes behind?" And holds up David's IOUs. Really, David.
Roland Cox is probably the leader of the organization called Paladins, they are dedicated to wiping out Jumpers who are an abomination in their eyes, because they believe that only God is allowed to have the unique ability that the Jumpers have.
For a 'cultist' like Roland, he has some very spiffy equipment specially designed to track down Jumpers and eliminate them. David has a run-in with him but luckily, he manages to escape and Jumps to his old home. Shaken, he nonetheless decides to explore (where's his damn sense of preservation?!) his old home. He manages to track down his old crush, Milly, who is currently working in a bar. He wanted to leave without speaking to her, but his old enemy, Mark, recognized him and created a scene. Angered, David then fought with him and ended up Jumping them into the bank which he robbed and left him there as revenge. Afterwards, he then took Milly out on a trip to Rome. Now, is he dumb or what? Apparently, his powers have made him reckless enough to actually use his powers on Mark and leave him where authorities can catch him. Dumb, dumb and dumb.
While sightseeing, David finally meets a fellow Jumper who has so much more experience than David with Paladins and Jumpers. Named Griffin, he is so much cooler than David. Of course I'm biased. He has a cool English accent. And that scores tons of points with me. Haha. He's not really the most stable crayon in the box, so hellbent on getting revenge against the Paladins that no sacrifice is too big for him.
So, Griffin and David are then being... attacked by the Paladins, two of them. With practiced ease, Griffin manages to dispose of his Paladin quickly and teleports away, leaving a corpse (I think) behind for David to handle. David, being the giant idiot that he is, tries to flee and because he must take Milly along and NOT let her know his powers, he is then arrested by the Roman police. Luckily, his mother, Mary, managed to help him escape, but that also fuels his curiosity. Why on earth was his mother there and all?!
So... while he escapes to the airport with Milly, telling her that he can't possibly go with her on the return trip and all that sort of drama, we see Roland interrogating Mark, squeezing information on David. He then travels to David's old home and threatens his father, basically. Upon seeing that he was unwilling to sell his son out, Roland kills him.
As he hears from Griffin that the Paladins would kill everyone in his life to hunt Jumpers down, David decides to check on his father, only to find him dead already. Worried about Milly's safety, he then seeks Griffin out on a truce, asking him to help him protect Milly. Just before the Paladins arrive, David Jumps Milly away to Griffin's secret hideaway. The poor girl was sort of... terrified and all, I think. And very angry at David.
Roland then using his very ultra-special technology, manages to track them down through the Jump Scar that Jumpers create every time they Jump. Griffin is freaking mad that David caused his secret hideout to be exposed and is swiftly engaged in a battle against Roland. The way cool part? Griffin teleporting a double decker bus to use against Roland. It's like... totally unheard of. Next coolest? Griffin using a freaking flame thrower! Roland, knowing that he cannot beat them through this method, grabs Milly and jumps through the Jump Scar back to Milly's apartment.
And here we see how dumb David really is. He wants to take on the hero's role and rush into the scene to rescue Milly and all that crap. And here we see how realistic Griffin is, (I'm not saying he's right and all. I'm not that callous, you know.) he wants to use a giant bomb to kill all the Paladins, the fastest way to eliminate them all without causing too much damage to oneself. Smart fellow. But David, wanting to rescue Milly, disagrees and they end up having like an epic fight, Jumping here and there, it's all pretty blurry and super fast because hey, they can teleport. In the end, David manages to trap Griffin and he leaves him stranded behind and heads off to Milly's. Stupidly, he is caught by the Paladins. Like duh. Who wouldn't have suspected that? Anyway, they fight and all. And David, in desperation, Jumps Milly's entire apartment into a lake. That is to kill the electrical wires that are holding him down, credits to Roland and team. Not wanting to drown to death, David once again Jumps part of the apartment to the library, yes. The library. It's probably officially ruined, thanks to David. He notices that he Jumped Roland as well after hearing him from somewhere near. He bids Milly to remain silent as he confronts Roland once more. And promptly Jumps them to the Grand Canyon. He tells Roland that he could have easily fed him to sharks and all, but he didn't. So... the point? Not all Jumpers are evil.
So, after that, we move ahead and see David tracking down his mother whom he last saw in Rome. He confirms for himself that yes, his mother is a Paladin as well, and she only left to protect him as he began to manifest his Jumping abilities at the age of 5. So it was like... either leave him. Or kill him. She then tells David that she's giving him a 'head-start', so meaning that she will one day hunt him down as well... David leaves, looking all emo and is joined by Milly who comforts him and finally, they Jump away. To somewhere warm.
END OF SPOILERS. I WISH I HAD SOMETHING WITTY TO SAY
Well, it's a pretty decent show, though the plot's pretty lacking. And because I'm a slash fan, I think that David and Griffin would look pretty damn hot together. Yes, you can ignore this.
Right. Is it me or is Hayden Christensen like always acting in sci-fi films? He was Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars series, plays David in Jumper. And according to rumors, he's playing a part in Neuromancer, a William Gibson novel. I think he's probably playing Chase/Chance, I forgot which, who is the main character. No, I haven't really read this... though I skimmed the first few pages. Not much of a sci-fi person... though some of it is pretty cool... I think Ender's Game is like my favorite...
Oh yes, Sweeney Todd, starring my two favourite actors as the main cast, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Of course I must watch this. I so wanted to watch this in the cinema, only to have that wish ruined when my brother told me that it was M18. Blah. And I was going to go with my second brother and his girlfriend. Which means free tickets. >.>
SPOILERS AHOY. (don't say I didn't warn ye.)
Sweeney Todd was originally Benjamin Barker, an ordinary barber with a beautiful wife and young daughter. Life was dandy until Judge Turpin (played by Alan Rickman, you know, SNAPE) spies Barker's wife, Lucy. He immediately desires her, hence, captures Barker under false charges, and sentenced him to hard labor in Australia. (history would have told you that many convicts were sent to the new colony in Australia to work.)
After 15 long years, Barker, now Todd, finally managed to escape back to London on a ship. He then parted ways with a fellow sailor, Anthony, and heads back to his old home which is above Mrs Lowett's pie house on Fleet Street. She then told Todd that his wife killed herself and that his daughter, Johanna, is now in Turpin's care. Enraged, Todd vows revenge on Turpin.
We then see young Anthony wandering the streets and chancing upon a glimpse on the now grown Johanna. And to fulfill cliches, he is now in love with her. However, his love for her pisses Turpin and he sent his servant to give the kid a beating.
Meanwhile, a young boy in the marketplace is advertising for another barber, by the name of Adolfo Pirelli (played by Sasha Baron Cohen, that Borat guy.) Todd who was in the crowd then denounced Pirelli's miracle tonic as a sham of 'ink and piss'. He then challenged Pirelli to a contest. Which was coincidentally judeged by Turpin's servant. Todd wins the contest easily, and to thank Turpin's servant for judging, he invites the man for a complimentary shave, claiming to give him the 'closest shave he will ever know.' Oh the pun, indeed.
Not so easily defeated, Pirelli returns to Todd's shop and confronts him. He then reveals the fact that he actually recognizes Todd as Barker and attempts to blackmail him. Angered by that puny upstart of a barber, Todd then hit him with a boiling kettle. He wasn't dead yet though, so in order to finish him off, Todd slitted his throat with his handy shaving razor.
Pirelli's young assistant, Toby, is then taken in by Mrs Lowett and begins to work at her pie shop. Meanwhile, Todd redesigns his barber chair to install a trap door that sends his victims to Mrs Lowett's underground basement bakehouse.
Judge Turpin makes an attempt to marry Johanna who refuses him. Clever girl. The disappointed man was then urged by his servant to visit Todd to enhance his appearance in order to attract Johanna. To Todd, this is just a godsend to exact his revenge. However, his plan was ruined when Anthony barged in half-way saying that by hook or by crook, he'll be fleeing the city with Johanna. An enraged Turpin stalks from the seat and sends Johanna to the madhouse until she agrees to marry him. While an enraged Todd begins to kill his unsuspecting customers and sends them to Mrs Lowett to be produced into meat pies.
Their business is a roaring success. And Mrs Lowett expresses her love for Todd, only to be interrupted by Anthony who says he found Johanna. Todd then whips up a plan to lure Turpin back, making use of Anthony's plan to rescue Johanna.
Toby then reveals his suspicions of Todd to Mrs Lowett who then consoles him falsely and locks him in the basement bakehouse. The poor boy then discovers the piles of corpses and the truth in the meat pies. Horrified, the boy then escapes into the sewers, narrowly escaping an early death. Meanwhile, Mrs Lowett warns Todd about Toby, only to have Turpin's servant come to investigate the strange smells coming from the pie shop. Todd then lures the servant to his barber shop and immediately kills him and dumps his body.
Todd then leaves to find Toby and probably silence him. Just as he leaves, Johanna and Anthony arrives, where he bids her to stay. She then hides herself in an old chest when someone else enters the shop. It is a beggasr woman, presumed mad who has been stalking the pie shop for quite some time, claiming that Mrs Lowett is a devil or something. Todd then returns, and is suprised by the beggar woman who apparently recognizes him. Sort of panicked as he sees Turpin about to enter, he murders her and dumps her body down the chute.
Turpin then enters and finally, on the pretext of giving him a shave, Todd prepares to kill him. He then reveals his true identity and finally, slits his throat. Upon discovering Johanna in the chest and not recognizing her as his daughter, he made to kill her, only to stop when he hears Mrs Lowett's screams. He rushes down to find that Turpin had somehow survived the fall and the murder, but he soon dies. As Mrs Lowett opens the over door to dispose of the corpses, Todd then sees the beggar woman properly for the first time and immediately recognizes her as his wife who is supposed to be dead. Mrs Lowett than tells him the truth, that Lucy survived her suicide attempt but had gone stark mad. In order to 'protect' him, she had lied, claiming that it was out of love that made her do it.
Todd calms her down, begin to dance with her and in a smooth motion, he shoves her into the open oven and locks the door firmly, burning her alive. He then cradles his dead wife close, the murder blade slipping from his hand as he mourns.
Just then, Toby open the sewer manhole and creeps out, picking up the forgotten blade. Then he slits Todd's throat and kills him.
What a long summary. Or am I just long-winded?
Tim Burton once again made the film according to his style. The people, like in Edward Scissorhand and Corpse Bride, had very pale, pasty complexion and haunted, shadowed eyes.
Depp was brilliant, and in his movements, there were some very subtle edges that reminded me of Sparrow and Scissorhand. But still, he made Todd into a new alter ego. Some times, he even made me wonder if he were really acting, or merely displaying a facet of his personality.
Carter was easily likeable, but she too reminded me of her Bellatrix persona who was as crazy in a way as Mrs Lowett. Likewise, Rickman is also a Potter alumni, and just like Carter, he was so very similar to Snape. Who can forget that nose? Or that strangely conscending tone that is so... delicious? Haha, that sounds... wrong.
Over all, it is a wonderful film. My biggest peeve would be the fact that in the songs, it's quite hard to pick out everything that they're singing, hence diminishing my enjoyment of the film. If only there were subtitles!
I don't get the title: Cloverfield. Why? It's not related to anything with clovers nor are there gigantic fields around... so why Cloverfield? It doesn't sound particularly catchy or intimidating... does it?
Went all the way to AMK Hub to watch this with Faza. And while this movie might not grace my very-hard-yet-makes-no-sense top 10 list, this is a decent enough show that most would enjoy, though I don't exactly foresee any cult following it.
SPOILERS AHEAD. TURN BACK TURN BACK! or just read it, damnit.
The scene opens in a normal farewell surprise party. Rob (the protagonist) is apparently going away to Japan to work for this... Slusho? company. (has hidden meaning or something, I think... this company is not all that it seems) Hencewise, his brother, Jason decides to host a surprise party for him. Hud, the best bud, is our main cameraman, albeit unwillingly at first, though he is pretty enthusiastic after a while that he loses his life because of this stupid video camera. Idiot. (rolls eyes)
Anyway, during this party, we learn some background information between the main characters. Apparently Beth and Rob have some sort of relationship, with some misunderstandings as well. Jason and Lily are set to be married, while Hud has a crush on Marlena.
Suddenly, between all the drama in the party, the earth shakes. Startled, everyone heads up to the roof to find out what the shit was happening when a large explosion takes place in the distance. Freaked, they headed outside to the streets where they get to see the Statue of Liberty beheaded and flung into their direction. (Does that foreshadow anything bad? Are you kidding me?) Anyway, the city's not safe anymore with some unknown foreign gigantic creature romping around decapitating stuff and levelling skyscrapers. So they head for safety to Brooklyn Bridge. Here, Rob receives a life-turning phone call from Beth. This useless girl is apparently trapped in her home and badly injured. This seals the deal immediately for Rob. He decides to head back to save the damsel in distress. However, the monster attacked during this turn of events! Brooklyn Bridge collapsed. And amidst that, Jason dies tragically. His fiancee, Lily is... horribly upset by his death.
Although grieved and all, Rob still wants to save Beth, and... (pardon the lameness) robs a nearby electronic store for a phone battery because his cell died and he lost all contact with Beth. We get to see tiny versions of the monster running around causing havoc, while the US military does their best to kill these creatures. But they're failing quite miserably.
Idiotic Rob and his bunch of tag alongs then head for Beth's place through a subway tunnel. Only to encounter the tiny monsters where all of them are attacked. Rob, Lily and Hud are wounded merely shallowly, yet Marlena, who tried to save Hud from being monster food, was bitten quite badly. Bleeding and panicked, they are lucky enough to be picked up by the military, where we see Marlena bleeding from her eyes and nose. The medics, okay, everyone, are horrified by her reaction, and immediately escorted her away. However, before they can kill/save her, her stomach erupted and all we see is blood. Way gross. What a way to die, and saving someone else at her own expense. Not worth it.
Shaken, they continue on their foolish journey. Even though the military has warned them of a time limit: if they cannot stop the monster by dawn tomorrow, they're going to bomb away the entire city. Yeah, nothing like a do or die to spice up the plot. Or what little there is of a plot, anyway. They managed to save Beth, who is injured, and thus can weigh them down. They managed to find the military where they are immediately made to evacuate. Happy ending for them? Oh no. Lily is made to leave first as there's one last spot on the nearby helicopter. And that's the last we get to see of her. She probably survived, I think...
Rob, Beth and Hud get on another helicopter, where they get to see the monster being bombed. They thought the monster has collapsed after a series of heavy bombings, however, that wasn't the fact, and it knocked their helicopter out of the sky.
It is dawn when they reawake after the crashing. They made to escape, however, Hud, not wanting to leave the damned camera behind, goes back for it, and is mauled to death, I think, by the freaking huge monster. We get a close up because Hud managed to film it apparently. Yes, he'll be lauded as a hero posthumously. What a way to die. Not.
Not wanting his death to be a waste, Beth and Rob grabbed the camera and headed for shelter under a bridge. And... recorded their last words, hoping someone would find the camera and figure out what the hell happened. The entire city is then bombed, as a final resort. And... we're made to believe that Rob and Beth are ultimately dead. The camera then rewinds to the beginning of the tape, where we see Beth and Rob on a date... and something falls into the water from the sky... Ominous...
END SPOILERS. you can all stop peeking now.
My one greatest pet peeve is the style in which they film the entire movie. Because they wanted to make it seem like a real thing, they made the filming very jerky and shaky. Midway through the show, I found myself developing a headache from the shakiness...
The other thing I didn't really like was the fact that they didn't really tie up loose ends. Halfway through, I was wondering how the hell they were going to resolve the monster problem... was it going to be Rob and gang or would it be the military or would it be something else? Yet... they did no such thing. Blah.
Even though they all sort of died in the end, I felt that Beth was basically the most useless one of the lot and it was partially her fault that they all died. If not for her, Rob would not turn back. Along with the stupid tag alongs. Marlena's death was the most wasted. Because she need not have stuck with the rest as she was no close friend of theirs and she totally had no obligations to save stupid Hud who got himself killed in the end after all. So her sacrifice was wasted. Hence, I feel that if not for Beth, only say... 2 people would have died, Jason and her. Instead, the rest would have survived because they would have made it out of the godforsaken city!
Anyway, decent enough movie. Alright, let's move on.
As there were apparently no halal place in AMK hub, Faza and I decided to go to Woodlands for our meal... can't tell whether it's late late ultra late lunch or super early dinner... after that, we headed to the library where Faza proceeds to be picky. Why the heck must someone have to have a chick book, I have no clue. I don't really read those stuff...
Yeah, borrowed some books, hopefully they'll keep me entertained enough.
(fucking blogger is fucking up the damned html. fuck them. this is so converting me to LJ)
2007 had plenty of good movies, but this has simply taken my breath away. I watched it on my 40-inch tv, but seriously, I wished I watched it at the big screen instead, with high quality sound system and the ambiance of other movie-goers other than my brother.
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE has converted me into a Beatles fan. Really. In the past, I merely felt that they had some pretty decent songs that were easy to learn and catchy enough. But after watching this musical film, well... I am convinced that they are seriously a very brilliant band. Infinitely so.
Jim Sturgess, acting as JUDE, so named for the song, HEY JUDE, was really cute, except that I didn't really like his haircut. Too... long and shaggy, not suited for his face. BUT I really loved his British accent! Yeah, that's a turn on for me, British accents on cute guys. (:
Joe Anderson who played Max was also cute, in the sort of... wild child way. Haha, the free-spirited one who lived mostly for fun and booze and weed.
The plot was sort of wonky in the middle, as in like they were there because the director/scriptwriters wanted to insert a particular Beatles song in, hence these scenes were included. But otherwise, this movie is really good. Though this is really a 'Either you love it or you hate it' type of movie.
FAVOURITE SONGS?

Okay, so I was supposed to meet the girls at like 11:30, though I was still at home at that time. And yeah, I was late. However, even lateness did not save me from the ambush hug that they smothered me in when I arrived. No, it wasn't Aishah, it was instead Sab, Faza and Mei Qiao, and later Julitta. Right, so it has been like a month over since we last saw each other, hence, the outing. Where we swapped stories about the going-ons in our lives. Nothing very interesting from me, seeing how I merely slacked at home and mooched in front of the computer/tv/ds, while hoping my mother would treat me as invisible. But sadly, she didn't. And just like me (and every other mooching teens), Julitta too has the same problem. Sab's way luckier in the fact that her parents work the entire day, so she can mooch to her heart's content. Blah. I wish my mother would work more too. (*lightning strikes* how unfilial of me)
So yeah, we probably irritated the hell out of our fellow passengers on the train heading towards town.
The movie that we watched was Mission Sex Control, a Korean movie, which could have been good except that it tried too hard to smuggle in as much genres as possible. What started off as a comedic, light hearted show about a woman teaching villagers the pros of... family planning, aka, condoms and birth control pills, turned nasty and dramatic and sad and almost violent. Which frankly, weirds me out. Oh well.
Later, we spent quite a lot of money on arcade games that are frankly quite addictive. We sort of pooled our tokens together, in order to complete an entire game. Which I think was nearly 20 tokens in total from us all. And that's a lot of money for just one game!
After that, we went window shopping and ate junk food. Faza and I got this tub of ice cream and shared with the others, so yeah, gorged on ice cream. Can you just see the pounds that I'm plying on?!
Pity I couldn't have dinner with them, as my cousin was having her birthday dinner and I was required to attend. She turns 30 this year, old, no? Anyway, dinner was... very... reminiscent of a chinese wedding dinner. What with the suckling piglet and shark fin soup. It is also my shock and horror to find out that the 9 people spent about $500 on just dinner! Do you know how expensive that is?!
Yeah, returned home pretty late, about 10 plus, but it was a sort of fun day for me, wouldn't mind going out and having fun again. Except for the fact that my mother likes to nag at how useless I am, having fun outside, leaving her with chores at home. It's enough to drive a person mad. Oh wait, aren't I crazy already?
I have been watching tons of movies lately, be it on the big screen or online. So much that my mother has been mentioning about it. Hey, it's not like I still have homework to do or something, right? It's my holidays, so that should mean that I am free of all obligations and should be allowed a gun to shoot off idiots dead spending my time however I want.
Anyway, the two latest movies I watched were I AM LEGEND and WARLORDS. (abusing the caps lock is actually quite fun. So is the bold function)
If you had read the book that I AM LEGEND was based on, one would notice that like all book-to-movie productions, A LOT of... artistic license? was made used of in the films. Ah well, perhaps, the movie was much happier as compared to the book.
Will Smith was seriously brilliant, he managed to bring across what the last person on earth might have felt through the way he acts, and the things he does. Placing mannequins in strategic locations, he pretends they are real, actual people, and holds one-sided conversation with them. How can you not feel sorry for him? And the fact that he is still strong mentally, and has not (a) gone all bonkers and deluded. (b) not joined the vampires, even if he seriously cannot be infected (c) say 'to hell with it all' and kill himself off. Instead, he experiments and lab rats, trying to find a cure for the infected people, even though they certainly do not appreciate the help that he's trying to give. I mean... if it was me, I would have killed them all off, if possible... or die in the process. I certainly wouldn't want to help these ungrateful creatures.
The effects were great, even though it was too loud sometimes, that I actually edged back even though that isn't possible due to the seats, and covered my ears. Which would be embarrassing if other movie-goers saw me like that.
The creatures were gruesome, with horrendously distorted features and non-functioning vocal cords since all they're able to do is to howl and make noises. I refuse to label them as vampires because vampires are, in my opinion, gorgeous creatures of elegance that make use of seduction and mind tricks to get their desires.
I felt that the part where the dog got infected was the saddest, imagine yourself having to kill your last and only companion that you know surviving out there... it's... really painful because you know that without this friend, things are just going to seem bleaker and you have more time on your hands without someone occupying your attention. And that added time would mean... more time to lose your mind with.
Food for thought: Why didn't Robert Neville in the movie just... burned all those vampires during the daytime? I mean, he could have searched for their lair, and burn down the entire building... and if he did want to save some... why couldn't he just... drugged them all out like that one female vampire in which became his test subject... unwillingly?
The WARLORDS movie was... well, I don't really know why they bothered rating it as a NC-16 movie, because frankly, whatever that counts as blood and gore are just plain laughable. (rolls eyes) Worst scenes actually happened in animes, so yeah. Not gory at all.
Anyway, the show's theme was all about brotherhood and... more brotherhood. I was sort of bored most of the time and well... the show is just too cliched for words. Seriously... and I felt that the little romance thing they tried to input was just plain lame. I would rather not have that ridiculous romance affair. Er Hu (Andy Lau) was the most... erm... honorable character, and because he was too much of a wild card, the imperial court who hated such people, used Pang's (Jet Li) hand to kill him off. Which than led to Wu Yang's (Takeshi Kaneshiro) misunderstanding so he killed off the woman and when he found out that Er Hu still died, he went to kill Pang. However, while he did stab at his sworn brother, the imperial court already sent their own men to assassinate him because Pang was still an outsider, no matter how glory he had helped them achieve.
Anyway, to me, it's a sort of show that would have its conflict resolved more... smoothly if the three main characters would just sit down and hash it all out. And maybe, only the woman needed to die. For trying to spoil their brotherhood.
I was sort of planning to rot away at home before the computer, as my previous plans had fallen through. I was supposed to go christmas shopping with my cousin, who because of her over protectiveness as a mother, could not leave her son's side for he was ill and she didn't trust her husband to take care of him properly. [phew, run-on line] And since I had declined Aishah's previous offer of going out to Escape, there wasn't really anything for me to do. Until Kimberley asked me if I wanted to go out. Hence, we decided to go get our ears pierced.
We sort of asked around, on where to get the deed done, but few could answer. My mother couldn't give much helpful information as hers was done by her own mother, with a needle cleansed with a flame and lots and lots of alcohol. That must be painful. ]
Anyway, we headed to Orchard in the end, and finally had it done by a jewellery shop. It cost me like $80, for titanium earrings and 2 bottles of... solution. Ouch indeed, I mean, if I went to those cheapo shops, I could have gotten what, 8 earrings? Oh well. Safety first. Or so they say.
Kimberley's were much more expensive, over $100, for she had gotten white gold. Which I didn't like, I mean, gold, whenever yellow gold or white gold, doesn't really suit me.
The procedure: [1] sit down on the stool and fill in your particulars on a form handed to you by the person in charge. if under 18, let your guardian/parent sign the form. [2] wait patiently as the salesperson cleanse your ear with alcohol. [3] let her spray mentholated spirit and watch as she marks your ears with a marker. [4] watch in apprehension as she inches closer with the 'stapler thing', towards your ears. [5] and roll your eyes when she finally pierces the ears as it barely hurt at all. [6] mentally breathe a sigh of relief.
Look, I was really nervous about the whole ear piercing issue because several of my aunts had their ears infected and it really hurt, and I still remembered the tale that Jia Xuan told me before, about she screaming her head off. Blah. It also didn't help that I went first. And how painful is the actual piercing? Just like stapling yourself accidentally. So yeah, that mine was all painless, made me really glad.
After that, we went to watch a movie. As it was still early, so why not? We had wanted to watch Enchanted which Kimberley said it was really good for she watched it again and wanted to rewatch it. But, the earliest show was at 9, so we couldn't watch it. Instead we ended up watching Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
The storyline... is barely there, and the themes of the show was seriously cliche, and too overused. Although the actors are good, the movie was still quite a flop. Dustin Hoffman was good in his role as Mr Magorium, an eccentric quirky old man who despite his age, was not jaded by the world and delights in delighting children. However, at the age of 243, he feels that his time is up, hence he decides to leave his store to Molly Mahoney, played by Natalie Portman. I think she was really good in here, and her image reminded me of Twiggy, her short cropped hair. Molly was shocked for she had wanted to quit her job and pursue her career in music, and tries to get Mr Magorium to stay by showing him the joys of life. Adamantly, the man still decides to depart in the end. He died. With his death, and Molly's inability to believe in herself, the store loses its color and glory and magic, and in the end, Molly decides to sell it off. However, Eric, who too works at the store despite being only 9, turns to the other worker, Henry and gets him to help. Henry then helps Molly see that the magic of the store comes from her, and gets her to believe in herself. And hence, the store was saved in the end.
Seriously, the movie was boring, for one that's geared to children. I wouldn't believe that normal children would be interested, other than those precocious and too mature kids. Right. Because Kimberley's sisters were all bored by it.
The movie was obviously not as good as the book. Even for me who has yet to finish the book due to incompetence and procrastination. Blah. It's a good book, that I know. But I cannot refute the fact that it has been sitting on my shelf for at least half a decade or so.
What book was I talking about? Philip Pullman's trilogy; His Dark Materials, Book 1, Northern Lights. However, the movie was aptly named The Golden Compass. Simply because Lyra and company did not make it to the North, to see the Aurora Borealis and rescue Lord Asriel. Instead, they only managed to save the kids from the Gobblers who were trying to separate the children from their daemons [which works as their souls]
However, I must say that the actors were good, Daniel Craig was cool in his role as an adventurer, the infamous Lord Asriel which the Magisterium had wanted to kill more than once. Nicole Kidman was very convincing, in her role as Mrs Coulter, all sultry and confident and oh-so-very evil. She portrayed the character very well that I really honestly disliked her in the film. And also her daemon as well. Dakota Richards was pretty good too, for a debut, if I'm not wrong. She's also quite young, and I absolutely adore her accent. Heh.
All the way to Vivo to watch Hero, with Amirah and Faza. Normally, I wouldn't go that far just to watch a movie, unless my brothers were with me and paying for the tickets and the dinner afterwards, but really, those two have like never really stepped foot into Vivo, so yeah, can't deprived them of the chance.
The movie's pretty decent, Takuya Kimura is so pretty still, for his age. >.> Can't believe I really said that... but it's really fun to watch, especially with the witty dialogues between the actors. However, the plot leaves me a little wanting; too cliche... I mean, you can practically guess what's going to happen next... which makes it not so good.
The music of the movie's quite nice, maybe I should go get the OST... if I do spot it online though. Nowadays, I'm using my brother's computer, while he's still away. For now. My own graphic card's wonky, and replacing it is a hassle because other parts are old too... My 4K over worth of music... blah. At least the hard disks are not corrupted.
Entertainment aka why I will be BUSY so GO AWAY[ 23:50 ]
ah, sorry for the anti-social remark, NOT. But yeah, aside from all the going out and the travelling, I will be busy. Holing up in my house, watching shows and you know, all that jazz that I 'promised' to do before.
Here's a list of what I'm currently watching:
ENGLISH HEROES: Because PETER is hot. And I'm not the only one who thinks that. Because SYLAR is THE MAIN reason to be watching this. And he's really cute in the whole Star Trek thing. He's seriously very convincing in his role.
GOSSIP GIRL: because my brother has it on his computer, and everyone has good fashion style. Well, almost everyone... And that guy, CHUCK, I think. He's pretty hot. Now that's a shallow reason...
PUSHING DAISIES: Because it looks pretty damn interesting. And hey, it's not everyone who can bring the dead back in such a comical way. And not to mention, the very cute Pie Shop. And the equally cute pie-maker...
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: Only because it's funny. And well... it's pretty interesting, though a little predictable. And Gabby's issue with her ex and current husbands are really hilarious. I hope Victor doesn't really die, and have his revenge on them both.
JAPANESE NOBUTA WO PRODUCE: Because YAMAPI~ is sooo freaking adorable, acting all drunk and weird and touchy-feely. Haha, yes, yet another shallow reason. But he is cute. It just makes me wanna hug him and all that... Kyaa~
HANA KIMI:Right, I'm down to the last episode. And this is seriously better than the Taiwanese version. Even though Oguri Shun isn't very cute, Shirota Yuu and Ikuta Toma make up enough for his un-hotness. Lol, hope no one kills me for that...
GOKUSEN I and II: ... Well, I have no good reason for wanting to watch this... but can I say that MATSUMOTO JUN's in it? Haha, I feel like some bimbo for all my reasons.
PSYCHOMETRER EIJI: I watched this halfway, and I shall finish it. Just like I finished the entire manga series. But damn, the manga's really scary...
PRINCE OF TENNIS LIVE ACTION: Because I loved loved lovedlove the anime series to death. Especially HYOUTEI. And hey, SHIROTA YUU will be in it.
TAIWANESE X-FAMILY: I am still stuck on episode 34. I seriously need to catch up... and I will. Soon. Blah. Sort of lost my momentum for this, as I used to watch it every night and now, there's just a whole ton of episodes to watch...
ANIME BLEACH: Forgot where I stopped at actually, but probably around 142, I think... Chad and Ishida were fighting two idiots, while Ichigo was made to watch, and not allowed to interfere... because the guys wanted to show off their new skills...
NARUTO: Don't really know if I want to watch... since I read the manga already... maybe I'll just wait a while longer...
Anyway, finished some movies too
HOT FUZZ, the WAITRESS, and I rewatched SERENITY and went with Denise for STARDUST. And I wanna watch the SEEKER and THE GOLDEN COMPASS too.
P.S: Yes, I sort of just mutilated my BOLD and COLORS toolbar. You're welcome to sue, except you won't be getting much in the end, so just fuckoff if you have a problem. Have a nice day while you're at it, and I'll pray that you drop dead, okay? [ insert fake smile]
P.P.S: Why am I so bitchy? Just finished reading PirateGrrl's story about an antisocial dick, WMSmoker seeks Seclusion. Go read it. It's funny. Unless you're homophobic, then get the hell away from here.
... We were supposed to be returning to DLSS, doing whatever ridiculous ideas that Annabel managed to cook up in her wacky brain. But however, a certain fairly important person in this ludicrous scheme was missing. Very cleverly getting herself grounded at such a convenient timing. You see, who doesn't want to applaud the genius that Annabel is? Sarcasm intended, of course.
So, a very bored Denise and I loitered outside the school gates for a while, not wanting to dally long, in case people thought we were kidnappers or something. Ok, I exaggerate. We were teenagers looking bored. Not kidnappers-in-training. This is Singapore after all.
The story continues: We wandered around, talked quite a fair bit, contacted Annabel who remained grounded. And was unexpectedly hung up on by said girl. That done, we headed towards a movie theater to catch a movie.
We even managed to sort of... debate over which movie theater. And the 'winner' being Jurong. Which sucked a fair bit. And I have already given them too much credit.
Alright. Alright. Everyone's a critic. Let's just ignore the crummy decor, lousy screen and uncomfortable seats. The only good thing is, apart from the two of us, there were like only 4 other people? So we basically had the whole cinema to ourselves. Except for the fact that the cinema was... for the lack of a politer word, small.
Stardust was good, even if the cinema made it seem bad. Though the movie didn't exactly follow the plot.
Ignore if you don't want spoilers. For book or movie.
We begin off with seeing Tristan's dad, Dunstan Thorn, strolling through the gap in the Wall for a little walk. And was promptly stopped by the fellow in charge of guarding the wall. With a little sneaky move, he runs through the gap, and finds himself in a magical city.
As he wanders inside the Marketplace, he catches the eye of a certain slave girl. Who isn't want she seems to be. Her owner, a witch, Ditchwater Sal, [I think] leaves them alone as she heads for a drink. And this slave girl, obviously very... deprived, seduces him, giving him a snowdrop charm in return. Dunstan later marries another girl, and has a daughter which was NOT in the movie.
9 months later, we have Tristan. Who swiftly grows up into this clumsy, silly fool who thinks himself in love with the prettiest [and richest] girl in town, Victoria. Who is a bitch, period. Grandly believing that she was his true love, [yucks, and so NOT!] he tries all ways to get her hand in marriage. And something particular happens when he's a little tipsy on champagne. They see a falling star, and he states that 'for [her] hand in marriage', he'll bring the star back.
And being the bitch that she is, Victoria agrees, even though she says she already has a suitor that is going off to buy her a wedding ring.
Tristan sets off, but is thwarted by the Keeper of the Wall, who is much cleverer now, and isn't tricked by Tristan. The poor kid then returns home and confess his mission to his father. Who understands him because he knows Tristan is meant for greater things than staying in the village of Wall. So yeah, his dad told him the truth of his birth, and gave him the letter his mother left for him. Tristan burns the Babylon Candle, which according to this rhyme, NOT in the movie but the book,
How many miles to Babylon? Three-score miles and ten. Can I get there by candle-light? Yes, there and back again. If your heels are nimble and light, You will get there by candle-light.
However, he thinks of Victoria and the star needed, and ends up in an unknown place. In which he meets Yvaine the star, and offends her easily. Said, Tristan Thorn is an idiot alright. Anyway, he captures her with the help of a silver chain from his father. Without choices, Yvaine follows him grudgingly.
This is different from the book because the candle and chain was supposed to be given to Tristan by this man who he meets on the road after he leaves the Wall with his father's help.
Anyway, while Tristan found the star, other people too want to own the star, each with their own selfish goals.
A trio of old witches hope to eat Yvaine's heart in order to restore their youth and powers. They send out the eldest who then set up a trap for Yvaine.
In the castle of Stormhold, a dying king throws his ruby necklace into the sky and knocks a star from the heavens which is Yvaine. In order to inherit the kingship, his remaining three sons are to recover the lost necklace which is now hanging around Yvaine's neck. Wonderful.
Okay, later, Yvaine manages to escape Tristan with a unicorn's help, and she stumbles into the trap laid out by the witch. Just as the witch is about to cut her heart out, Tristan and the first prince of Stormhold, Primus, enters the inn. And ruined her evil plan. Trying to get rid of them, the witch sent Primus a poisoned drink in which he declined and sent it to Tristan. He was about to drink it when the unicorn knocked it away, revealing the poison. With no other ways, the witch resorted to violence and promptly killed Primus who noticed that the ruby necklace was with Yvaine.
Alright, because I'm tired of typing...
Anyway, after that, Tristan uses the last of the Babylon candle and finds himself on board a flying ship. Which is captained by a gay pirate, Captain Shakespeare. Which SO DID NOT happen in the book... blah.
Ok, the second prince, Septimus, then finds Primus' dead body and learns that the ruby had passed by the area and that eating the heart of a star can give him immortality, hence he chases after Yvaine now. Fun, no?
While all the drama's happening, Yvaine is slowly falling in love with Tristan who has become a lot more good looking and useful, thanks to Captain Shakespeare who also kindly delivered them near the village of Wall. They then catch a ride with Ditchwater Sal who was conveniently there.
He also tells Tristan a terrible news. If Yvaine were to go through the Wall, she'll become a lump of rock. Because our world doesn't believe in magic or fantasy. Troubled, Tristan grips with his conscience.
... Time skips, because I'm lazy, Yvaine and Tristan confess their love and you know the way it goes... so in the morning, Tristan heads back alone to the Wall, leaving a message with the sleepy innkeeper who gave Yvaine the wrong message. The distraught girl/star then heads for the Wall, heartbroken.
The slave girl/Tristan's mom/Una/princess of Stormhold and the Witch all rush to drag Yvaine back. Because the Witch needs her alive, beating heart, because Una doesn't want Yvaine to die. The Witch kills Ditchwater Sal and drag Una and Yvaine back to her... lair.
Tristan who learns that Yvaine was heading towards Wall and rushes to stop her, was too late, and heads towards the Witch's lair. Septimus follows suit. The stupid thing here is that how on earth do they know where to go?!
Anyway, epic battle up ahead. Septimus and Tristan join forces due to the bad situation. They rush in and confront the witches. One of them was killed by the animals they reared for scrying, another... I forgot, leaving the eldest witch. Who then killed Septimus using a voodoo doll. And what was Tristan doing? Oh yeah, he was hiding behind with Una, after a brief reunion. What a man. Hmpf.
Anyway, in the end, the Witch was killed by Yvaine who because Tristan was here to save her, became that happy that she glowed like a nova and caused the Witch to explode. Wow...
So, yeah, because all other heirs of Stormhold were dead, Tristan became King. And ruled with Yvaine. Until he died, and Yvaine remained immortal ruler. Which was NOT in the movie.
In the movie, Tristan and Yvaine had descendants that took the throne while they became stars in the heavens, forever immortal. And Victoria marries this guy, Humpfrey or something, instead of Mr Monday, Tristan's ex-boss. There are also many other differences, but I'm too lazy to go point them out. Because frankly, I know people don't care. Because they probably haven't bothered reading the book.
Spent a ton of money today, well, not exactly my money...
Traveled all the way to Vivo, just to watch Ratatouille, and have dinner. The movie was good, the animations were smooth and the deliveries were funny. All in all, it was the sort of feel good, heartwarming sort of movie that's for the whole family. [I sound like some advertiser... blah]
Remy, a rat with a keen sense of smell, who desires to be something more than just a scavenger. He wants to cook, to create new tastes and flavors. He taught himself to read and watches Gusteau's cooking show to learn how to cook.
An accident lands him right into Gusteau's restaurant, which has been taken over by a sous-chef, Skinner, after his death, due to a harsh review by Ego. He sees Linguini, who comes knocking for a job, with a letter from his deceased mother. He is given a dirty job, as garbage boy. Afterwards, Skinner finds out that Linguini is actually Gusteau's illegitimate son, from the letter, and tries all ways not to let him inherit the restaurant.
Remy and Linguini manage to work out a plan; in which Remy cooks, while Linguini... looks human... well, a human puppet anyway, since Remy is responsible for the delicious food that Linguini appears to cook.
Gusteau's becomes famous once again, thanks to Remy. And Linguini inherits the restaurant as Remy finds the relevant documents that Skinner tried to hide. A pissed off Skinner tries to ruin Gusteau's. Meanwhile, Ego has come calling.
Under some very terrible conditions, almost everything falls to pieces. Remy and Linguini fight, the other chefs leave because of Remy, even Colette, though she does return, after remembering Gusteau's motto: Anyone can cook.
Anyway, all ends well, as Ego loves the food that Remy and his clan prepares. But Skinner and the health inspector managed to closed down the 'rat-infested' restaurant, so Linguini and Remy opens a bistro aptly named Ratatouille. Ego lost his job and reputation as a critic because he praised a rat-infested restaurant, but seemed happy at his new job... so yeah, everything ends nicely.
Onto our dinner next!
We spend nearly $200 on dinner! At Aji by Hanabi, this Japanese restaurant. And it was just magnificent. I haven't had Japanese cuisine for quite some time, a few months, if I'm not wrong. Aji had great food, the sashimi was brilliant, bursting in flavor just in your mouth, sliding down smoothly, leaving behind no unpleasant aftertaste. The meat were soft and chewy, not overcooked, and the fried/grilled stuff were crispy and warm, very fresh. My only pet peeve was that many stuff were too salty, especially because I don't really take salty food. The tea was not the usual watered down drink given at those lower end restaurants, and definitely not from a tea bag. It was brewed with tea leaves, and had this distinct flavor. Definitely worth the money, especially because I wasn't the one paying for it. Heh.
Just finished watching Stomp the Yard, courtesy of my brother's friend who had the video. The dance moves are snazzy and very cool, but the storyline left me highly disappointed.
During the beginning, where everything was just so hardcore and fierce and downright angry, and the moves kept me wanting more, as the dancers gyrate their way through, parting the crowd, feeling each other up and howling away. Then we shifted from the gunshot to this college thing.
The stepping dances were definitely a downer after all the excitement at the hip hop dance competition. In fact, I kind of rolled my eyes, waiting for our main guy, DJ [cliche-ish name anyway] to step up literally and show them a thing or two. My wait wasn't long, though he has to go around making moon eyes at some girl... gee, we mustn't forget our main girl April, or else there wouldn't be any catalyst to this predictable plot. So our April happens to be the girlfriend of this 'important' guy Grant in this fraternity Gamma whose mascot happens to be a wolf, so the frat basically dances around and howls at appropriate moments. On the opposite team is Theta, and its mascot is the python, hence they have to imitate the python thing with their arms and all that.
So, as predicted, DJ gets into trouble because of April and issues after issues spring up. In the end, he joins Theta and they move towards the National Stepping Competition. Or something like that. Then because of April again, DJ's nasty past got spilled and he was suspended so he couldn't compete. After some unimportant yakking, we see how April steps up to her father and gets DJ back into the game.
Blah blah blah, and we have the awesome dances with all sorts of special effects, nimble footwork and more howling from guys and girls, mostly from Gamma, the 7 times champion. Luckily, DJ gets back in the nick of time when both Gamma and Theta are at an impasse having a final showdown to end the draw.
Grant then shows off his solo dance, but [gasp!] it appears to be a copy of DJ's dance when he was practising on his own. DJ, not to be beaten, counters with the exact same dance, but at the end, he brings out his dead brother's gloves and executed his special move and promptly KO his opponent. Okay, fine, so he makes this final cool move and the crowd goes wild. And he scores! Yeah, like didn't you already expected it? Theta wins for once and the guy gets the girl. And they all probably lived happily ever after.
Yawn. With the exception of the to-kill-for dance moves and hot bods, Stomp the Yard would hardly be watchable because of the lame plot. Seriously, we need more storyline. Oh shucks that, Stomp the Yard has shown that even without some fancy plot, it's still keeps you at the edge of your seat thanks to the wonderful dancing. Man, they had better pay the choreographer and dance instructors more for spicing up the movie for them. The beginning had a really strong dark feel but it was totally smashed by the switch over to the school grounds.
And under the twilight sky the sound of a single gunshot rang true and clear, like the breaking of glass. And crimson, like the orange sky sprayed across my vision smearing pure white, tainting it, destroying it. And just like that, a last look and eyes fluttered close and the hand once holding onto mine fell limply away, never to clutch at me again. And all I wanted then was to scream, but there wasn't any sound, none that I could produce as the blood continued to seep and stained us all. And just like that, he was gone. Gone like the wind in the trees, gone from me...
Just something random that I came up with as I watched Duron's death. Kind of anticlimatic, the above paragraph might not be exact cos I don't exactly remember everything in the scene. My memory's not that good.
Right, so the Simpsons were pitifully short but hilarious, and there were plenty of spoofs and gag humor. There were some pretty lame parts and parts where the humor wasn't quite showing through, but it was entertaining. And seriously random. I laughed the most at the naked!Bart and the silly song of 'Spider Pig' cropped up in my head at the most random times. Quite worth the money to watch.
I'm quite pissed to learn from my brother that Stardust is probably only going to be aired in Singapore quite late, around November. It is simply ridiculous because Stardust is opening tomorrow! Just because we're in Asia, and not some big name country... blah. If it's gonna be this way, I think I'll just watch it online already. My second brother in Australia can probably catch this easily... except that he's not exactly a big fan of Neil Gaiman even though he likes the Sandman comics... I think.
I think I might be watching Disturbia one of these days, it seems kind of interesting, and the actor is quite good looking, so should be worth my time watching... though I only have a vague outline of the entire plot thanks to Faza's sister...
For some unbeknowst reason, my brother wants to watch Ratatouille... recapturing his lost childhood? Anyway, if he's going, I'm going too! Free tickets, why not? Heh, I'm such a freeloader...
And because I'm psychic, can I predict that Secret is going to be a flop? I seriously doubt Jay Chou's acting ability... he's about as expressive as a wooden block... and unless his character is those mute and broody and moody and gloomy kind... I am skeptic of this movie. Enough said.
And why bother going to the cinema, and waste like $7 plus to watch something that's gonna be on the television screen in a year or two? Rush Hour appears to have the same formula as always: Bad guys scheme to take over the world/make tons of dirty money/ kidnap this or that politician or rich guy or someone important, in comes two very different kind of cops, and this time, there's racial diversity to make it seem more unique. Stir in slapstick humor and some snazzy kungfu moves... well... Jackie Chan's kind of old now, like 50 plus? Ah well, mix well and serve hot before the nice layer melts and we end up with a flop.
The Bourne Ultimatum could be interesting, from what I've seen from the trailers... but I'll probably not watch it. It'll be on the television screen sooner or later anyway...
Plenty of spoilers bound ahead. Read at your own risk. Or blame your eyes for being too active. But we've all read the book anyway, right?
I woke up quite early today, not because I was particularly excited about today, but because I haven't quite finished my tuition homework, and she was coming at 10. Scary, no? Anyway, yeah, could hardly listen to what she was teaching today, my mind was busy wandering off. Yeah, had an erm... very early birthday celebration today, since 23/7 happens to be a weekday, and my family's not free. Busy schedules all of us. My arse.
Reached the Cathay at like, 1:45, but there wasn't anything to eat... we haven't had lunch, since tuition ended at 12 plus, and then movie started at 2:30. So, we walked around a bit, nice place, but kind of quiet, not bustling with people, various shops barely opened. Lunch was well... overpriced. Seriously, a hotdog and a drink cost $7 plus? Way overpriced.
The entire cinema was packed with people, full house and all that. And the theater was pretty large, definitely larger then the usual. So, settled in with a drink and food. We sat back and relaxed.
Rant begins here. You are warned. The movie... too hurried, lacks finesse, could be more subtle, was a little anti climatic. All that schmoosh and stuff. You know, in the book, Potter's hair was messy and uncontrollable. In fanon, aka fanfictions, his hair was messy in a sexy way, you know, post shag hair. So why, oh why is his hair in the movies atrocious and just downright ugly?! Ron... he was never good looking whether in the book, fanon or movie. So who cares. Hermione, good for her that she's looking pretty. Someone has to, when the other leads aren't dashing enough. Now, moving to Malfoy, in the book, he looks pointed and sharp. In fanon, he was Slytherin Sex God and Ice Prince. In the blasted movies... he looks like a bloody toad prince. >.> Granted, there isn't enough scenes of him anyway. Umbridge should get a bloody award for her brilliant performance as a... gods, I can't think of a milder word then bitch. >.> Yeah, and Helena Bonham Carter was pretty good... she reminds me of a female Jack Sparrow. Haha. The way she moves with that drunken gait. Dudley, surprisingly, with all that fats, could run quite fast. Ah, fear, the motivating factor. Congratulations to Mr Dursley, he looks more and more like a pig as the movies progresses. And Petunia, I'm sorry for seeing her in that horrendous outfit that she wore in her few scenes.
Spoilers begin here. Sirius's death wasn't at all sad for me. I know he dies, but the movie couldn't convey the sadness of his death, nor could it bring out Harry's hatred towards Bellatrix. The young version of Severus was kind of cute, in a puppy dog way. So much better than the Snape we have a love-hate relationship with. The scene with Umbridge was priceless, and they should have added in the scene McGonagall had with Umbridge. Overall, I didn't feel Harry's anger at being left out, at being ignored. In the book, during confrontations, there were plenty of capslock used, but few were felt in the movie.
Grittier? Not exactly, the book wasn't too dark or moody, at least, I have read much worse. The scene with Cho Chang was bad... just damn annoying. And she wasn't the sneak... >.< However, the fact was that when I read the book, I can sympathize with everything that's going on, but the movie lacks that factor, that the infallible Harry Potter is actually human inside and out.
Voldemort... ugly as usual, was boring. I didn't particularly feel worried about Potter's health. Lucius and his bunch of stupid Death Eaters looked like overgrown playground bullies. >.<>.> I liked Luna though, but she could be more dreamy, more off in her world.
Ah well, sixth movie, more of Draco. Please, movie producers and stylists, even if you don't wanna turn him into Slytherin Sex God/Ice Prince, can we please then stick to the canon look?! And more on Severus as well. Yay. I kind of dread the last book, even though I am looking forward to it. Is it very contradicting? Frankly, I don't know if I want Harry to live after all. Or do I even want him to be a good guy. >.> I kind of wish to see him all powerful and living it up. Shaking away Dumbledore and all that.
End spoilers. End rant. It's safe to stop peeking from behind your eyes now. Dinner was good, we walked to Plaza Singapura and since it was for my birthday, I was allowed to choose. Swensen's was it, since I have never really eaten there before. Seriously. We usually go for Japanese cuisine. Yeah well, change is good.
I had lamb, which was darn good, since I haven't had it for ages, more than a year in fact. I also had a root beer float and a bit of ice cream. The bill was scary though, $70 plus. Luckily, I'm not the one paying. Heh. So yeah, walked around a bit, even though it would hardly take off a bit of the weight that I would gain from that meal. Good day, all in all, but no mugging was done. Procrastinate on, procrastinate on. Sigh.
Stardust by awesome author Neil Gaiman, is going to be out on August 10, but I'm not too sure whether it opens on the same day here. I'm pretty sure my brother's going, and by hook or by crook, I'm going to make him bring me along. The actors are kind of mature looking though; I though Tristan and Victoria were like only 18, but they kind of look like they're in their late twenties already. But no matter what, I'm pretty sure this would be one damn good show.
Since they're already Stardust, won't they adapt Good Omens into film too? Because Good Omens is actually way cooler than Stardust, which is actually a romance.
And talking about Stardust, I kind of wrote this story that was a cross between Stardust and Sleeping Beauty. Not very original, I know.
His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass (titled His Dark Materials: Northern Lights in the UK) is a forthcoming film based upon the first novel in Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials, slated for release on December 7 2007 by New Line Cinema.[1] The story tells of Lyra's adventure to the far north in search of her friend. The movie title reflects the North American title of the novel The Golden Compass, known originally in the UK as Northern Lights. The project was announced in February 2002, following the success of other recent adaptations of fantasy epics, and at $150 million is expected to be New Line's biggest budget project ever after a series of box office disappointments in the past year.

OMG. I just saw this, and yeah, the 'OMG' expression came out. I have the entire trilogy at home, in fact I had it for like five years already, and you know what, I have never ever finished it. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I'll read it for some time, totally engrossed, but before I can ever finish it, I'll put it down and don't come back to it until at least a few months and I can't even remember the plot and have to reread the entire thing. It's been going on for ages, it's like the book's jinxed or something, cos I can't even make it through the first book, and it's not as if the writing's bad. I just can't finish it. >.> Fine, I shall resolve to finish reading it before the movie opens.
Completed the trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean. I went to watch it with my mother this afternoon, since my brother has once again fished out free Eng Wah vouchers from the sea. So yeah, went to the closest cinema, which was West Mall, boring. But I was there for the movie, not the shopping.
The movie's pretty predictable, so, I didn't know why my mother found it confusing. Oh yeah, she couldn't really tell the differences between Beckett and Norrington. Heh, since both of them wore the stupid white wig thingie that is really ridiculous looking. Plotwise... I found it lacking, but it's not really that important. Elizabeth has actually gotten herself a bigger role, she's pretty cool, but... she still thinks too much with her heart. And she should have smacked Will when she traded Jack for him. Will deserved to be smacked. >.< style="font-style: italic;">not favor him?! Barbossa... scheming and nasty as usual, but he's quite decent, and shows his nicer side for once. Jack's father should have more action, instead of that cameo he made during the voting of Pirate King. [reminds me of One Piece... eheh] Chow Yun Fat is seriously underrated. They insert him abruptly into the show and kill him off in the middle? What, was his pay too high?! Davy Jones... irritated me far too much.
The music's not bad though, sticks to its original theme and all. And I quite like the overall backstabbing and scheming and all that jazz. Will has finally wised up, Elizabeth shows her leadership skills, Jack... well, hallucinates some more. Barbossa becomes more interesting. But everything goes back to square one in the end. Will and Elizabeth are still kind of star crossed lovers, Jack... still hasn't really gotten his ship back, and Barbossa is sailing off with the Pearl. Familiar, no? It does however opens up the possibility of having another sequel, hopefully without the annoying sidekicks that Will and Elizabeth has become. It would be cool to see more of Jack and his past and his future; does he gets the immortality that he craves? And what's up with his dad? Is he someone special? He's got to be quite old, since Jack's like forty in the show?
Just finished watching Nana, the movie. Quite late, I know, since it was out in 2005, and has already gotten a sequel, which I'm not planning to watch. Nana, I supposed, was pretty alright. Interesting and very cool, I like the character designs of Nana and Hachi, which is the other Nana. However, the plot leaves me unsatisfied. Perhaps it's because the movie's only like 2 hours, and there's so much to explain, since the series is pretty long. The manga's still running, I think.
However, I'm not watching the sequel because there was a change of cast. Aoi Miyazaki, who played Komatsu Nana was replaced by Yui Ichikawa; Shin, originally portrayed by Matsuyama Kenichi, is now to be played by Hongo Kanata; and Nobou Kyou has taken over Ryuhei Matsuda's role as Ren. Right, personally, Ren and Nana [K] are like major characters, and I kind of like Shin. A lot. C'mon, it's a bleached version of L looking punk and playing a guitar! How can I resist that? And he has a lip ring thing!
